Drinks & Thinks- How to Know a Witch When You See One

Join us for an evening with Dr. Kelsie Doty, Verna Sullivan-Marler Professor of Fashion Studies, Kansas State University, to explore the historical traces of fashion such as striped socks, pointed hats, black cloaks, maybe a broom  that were used to accuse  women of witchcraft and to vilify them. Would you know a witch if you saw one? For centuries, the figure of the witch has been recognized as much by her clothing as by her deeds. This talk traces the history of women accused of witchcraft, and the dress and visual markers used against them. We'll look at how these visual codes took shape, what they reveal about the anxieties of the societies that created them, and how many of those same markers still shape how we picture a "witch" today.
